Biscochito’s History

Biscochito’s History

2006

Kimberly starts Santa Lucia

While pregnant with her first child, Kimberly started Santa Lucia. Santa Lucia is a for profit company that works with the state and federal government to provide residential and support staffing as well as health care oversight for over 300 New Mexicans with developmental disabilities. It was at Santa Lucia that Biscochito’s founding team became colleagues, advocates, and friends.

2020

The team starts to imagine Biscochito

We began a new organization with a vision of person-centered care for seniors. We spent a year hosting caregiver support meetings and learning about in-home caregiving. We chose the name Biscochito over a bottle of wine.

The Circle of Love

Andrea, Kimberly, and Julie continue hosting caregiver support meetings. Kimberly begins sharing her Circle of Love philosophy with caregivers and the larger community – building a shared language and way of understanding the needs and desires of the people we support.

Kimberly sells Santa Lucia and the Biscochito team begins work..

The same week Kimberly became her grandmother Martha’s full-time caregiver, a company from Utah offered to buy Santa Lucia. After discussion with the core team and advisors, months of due diligence, and a fair bit of inner turmoil, Kimberly negotiated a deal that kept the team together and invested the proceeds from the sale into Bischochito.

Pods

The founding team at Biscochito begins to understand the complexity of home-caregiving, its dynamic workforce and even more dynamic client needs. It becomes clear that a centralized command and control structure is an impediment to good caregiving and a healthy organization. We begin experimenting with self-governing pods and find the Buurtzorg example.

NON-PROFIT

The Problem

To maintain profitability, most caregiving agencies pay caregivers as contractors, with no health benefits and minimal professional training and support. As a result, the industry has seen a spike in employee turnover rate, which rose to a staggering 77% in 2022. According to multiple surveys and studies, factors such as poor support, low pay, lack of recognition, and poor management have been major contributors to the trend.

Our Answer

Biscochito has adopted a non-profit operating structure to ensure that all the revenue generated in the enterprise is available for critical caregiver support and reinvestment into growing a unique and sustainable caregiving ecosystem. A major success factor is the non-hierarchical structure, which relies on self-governed pods of caregivers, supported with a lean core administrative and coaching team. By streamlining business operations in this way, we can provide a best-in-class compensation package that includes fully funded health benefits, paid time off, emotional, psychological, support, and management/business acumen training.
